libertas sd8688 causes crashes/panics all the time

It's very unlikely that heat is the problem. That was what I
suspected first due to the broken design of the Guruplug. First I
tried to remove the casing, which reduced the heat significantly. It
didn't help. Then I added a fan, still no casing. No part felt warm.
It still crashed. The heat problem is mainly linked to the use of
gigabit ethernet. I don't use ethernet at all.
Yes, correlation only suggests a cause, it doesn't prove it, or at
least it gives a place to begin looking. Is there a way to debug this
further? It's very easy for me to reproduce.
Another hint is that this only seems to happen in wifi client mode (I
haven't verified this myself, but the Guruplug is reported to work
fine as a wireless router).
