This works for me:

ifconfig eth0 down hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
ifconfig eth0 up

Note that this change is not persistent:  the MAC address stored in
EEPROM is not modified.

This command is used to write directly to the registers of the MAC
controller, which has nothing to do with the MAC address.
